Recovery from industrial units begins in Goa
Following the Supreme Court's order of withdrawing power rebates to industrial units, Goa government has began one of its biggest recovery campaign. Goa government will be recovering dues around Rs 16 crore from companies based in Goa. The companies which have to pay dues include big names also like Sesa Goa, Nestle India and MRF.
There are more than 100 industrial units in the state, which are due paying government. Power Minister of Goa, Aleizo Sequeira told media that government has started process of issuing notices to such industries. Process of identifying such industries and issuing notices may take few weeks. Industries in Goa were rewarded 25% power rebate back in 1996. But, after a Supreme Court verdict, concession to them has been withdrawn.
This rebate was always mired in controversy and under scrutiny of law, as then Power Minister of Goa, Mauvin Godinho approved this rebate without a House discussion. Against this, BJP leader Manohar Parrikar filed a petition before Goa bench of Bombay High Court. This bench gave an order against the rebate and canceled that order in 2001. Companies seeking power rebate moved to Supreme Court against High Court's decision. But in its May 2010 decision, Apex Court denied any alter in HC's decision. So, now Government has started its process of recovering dues.
