Rash of animal deaths raises concerns about Bangladesh zoo

Rash of animal deaths raises concerns about Bangladesh zoo Dhaka - A second giraffe died at Dhaka zoo Wednesday, raising questions over management Bangladesh's prime zoological garden.

It was the fourth death of a large animal in less than a month.

"The three-and-a-half-year old calf died all on a sudden although it was in a good health following it recovered from ailment," Bibekananda Chowdhury, acting curator of the zoo, told reporters.

The other giraffe died of dehydration on September 8, leading to the suspension of the curator and a deputy curator of the zoo. The dead giraffes were among a group of five of the animals brought to Dhaka zoo from South Africa in June 2008.

A rare Bengal tiger and a lion also died at the zoo recently. The current death toll of wild animals rose to 22 in the first nine months of the year, officials said.

They said a sambar deer, baboon, wildebeest, Malayan tapir, a tiger, two fresh water crocodiles and one zebra were among the animals died at the zoo since January 2009.

Wildlife experts blamed a poor healthcare system and bad management at the zoo for the animals. (dpa)
