Rare, Pink Dolphin 'Pinkie' discovered in Louisiana waterway might be pregnant
Pinkie, a rare pink dolphin, was discovered in the Louisiana waterway recently. It was also reported that the animal may be pregnant. According to New Orleans ABC affiliate WGNO, the creature was first spotted by Captain Erik Rue of Calcasieu Charter Service back in 2007 in Calcasieu River's ship channel.
Nearly after 10 years later, Rue said that he has been seeing Pinkie swimming almost every day. KLFY News reported that he, at first, did not think that Pinkie could be an albino because he was 100% pink. But, this is probably not the case.
According to National Geographic, a genetic scientist Greg Barsh has argued that Pinkie is still likely an albino. He carried out his study on the genetics of color variation at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Alabama.
Albinism takes place when cells fail to produce normal levels of the pigment melanin. There are two telltale signs of albinism, including red eyes and blood vessels that can be noticed through pale skin devoid of pigment. Pinkie had both these signs.
Rue has described Pinkie as a curious dolphin who at times swims within five to 10 feet of his boat. He has lately discovered that Pinky is a female dolphin. He said that it's unclear where exactly she has got her unique hue from.
Furthermore, he said, “Dolphins have pink bellies, so I started thinking that this is a genetic glitch. If it was albino I believe it would be white. I've changed what I thought over time, as I analyzed the pictures I have”. He mentioned that besides her pink color and her eyes not opening all the way, the creature is a perfectly normal dolphin and does all the things others do.
