London, Dec 5: One of just two surviving leaves in Mozart's hand with cadenzas written for the Sinfonia Concertante in E flat, one of his first masterpieces, has been sold for 110,900 pounds at an auction in London.

The folio set a record for a single page of Mozart's work and surpassed Sotheby's estimate of 100,000 pounds.

A private collector bought the manuscript, represented by London dealer Maggs Ltd.

The previous record, set in 1998, was 89,500 pounds for a sheet bearing the notes for the opening of Rondo K.386 in A major.

The Sinfonia Concertante, created by 23-year-old Mozart in 1779 for violin, viola and orchestra, landed him in the ranks of some of the greatest composers in history.

The leaf, an early draft written hastily in the composer's own hand, has a 27-bar sketch for a cadenza for viola and violin Mozart likely wrote for his father and himself and, overleaf, a composition for horn.

The sheet had not been seen in public for decades before the auction and had not been available for scholars to examine.

"We were glad to see this extraordinary survival attract such strong competition. Its significance as the most important single leaf of Mozart to have appeared on the market for decades is reflected in the price it achieved,” BBC quoted Dr Simon Maguire, a music specialist at Sotheby's, as saying.

"It is one of Mozart's greatest works, and we are thrilled to have handled a manuscript that takes us so close to its original inception," he added. (ANI)
