Islamabad, Jan 2: The shattered leadership of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is now talking of restoration of the pre-Nov 3 judiciary in accordance with the will and statement of its slain leader Benazir Bhutto.

A senior PPP leader said the party wanted complete independence of the judiciary.

This was the only stumbling issue on the charter of demands between the PPP and the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM).

The text of the charter shows that the APDM wanted that All Supreme Court and High Court judges, who were removed on Nov 3, 2007, should be restored.

The ARD position was that "the courage and principled position taken by the judges of the superior judiciary who did not take oath under the PCO is recognised. The declaration of emergency dated Nov 3, 2007 issued by the Chief of Army Staff will be withdrawn. The Provisional Constitution Order be revoked and independence of the judiciary restored".

Commenting on the party plans, PPP leader said, “This issue might be discussed in Wednesday’s central executive committee's meeting in Naudero.”

PPP leader further disclosed that party had decided in the life time of Benazir Bhutto that even new appointments in the superior judiciary would be made by the parliamentary committee, comprising parliamentarians from both the government and the opposition.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Vice-President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi said that his party would campaign in the last six days of elections highlighting its demand to restore the deposed judges.

He hoped that the PPP would support the restoration of sacked judges.

Hashmi, while talking about the election commission's statement on consulting political parties about holding of elections, said the government of dictators never consulted any political party and if it did so, such consultations were meaningless. (ANI)
