Poll: two of three French adults are "disappointed" by Sarkozy

French President Nicolas SarkozyParis - Two years after taking office, French President Nicolas Sarkozy finds himself rejected by nearly two of three French adults, according to a poll published Monday.

In the survey, which was carried out by the TSN Sofres institute and published in the free daily Metro, 65 per cent of respondents said they were "disappointed" with Sarkozy, while only 24 per cent said they were "satisfied."

In addition, 63 per cent judged his performance in office negatively, against 28 per cent who held the opposite opinion.

That result is virtually identical to what Sarkozy's predecessor, Jacques Chirac, received in the same poll at the same stage of his presidency, two years into his first term, and it did him little harm in the long run. Chirac was easily re-elected to a second term in 2002.

Sarkozy's low standing in the polls also seems to be having little effect on next month's elections for the European Parliament. Polls show his centre-right UNP party leading the opposition Socialists by several percentage points. (dpa)
