Pluto’s Mountains, Hazy Atmosphere revealed in New Images from New Horizons

New Horizons has revealed several surprising things about Pluto since its launch about a decade ago. Now, the probe is sending photos and data to earth. The probe collected data during its flyby to the dwarf planet.

NASA has already started downlink phase of New Horizons, where the space agency is analyzing data sent by the probe. The latest round of photos sent by New Horizons is showing the surface features of Pluto in great details. Hazy atmosphere of the dwarf planet can be seen beautifully backlit by the sun.

The latest images are showing frozen planes, icy mountains and other features of the planet. While providing details about photos captured by the probe, Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of New Horizons, said, “This image really makes you feel you are there, at Pluto, surveying the landscape for yourself. But this image is also a scientific bonanza, revealing new details about Pluto’s atmosphere, mountains, glaciers and plains”.

According to NASA reports, the probe is more than 70 kilometers from the surface of Pluto, but it still on its mission. During its flyby, New Horizons collected data about the planet with the help of its scientific instruments. Now, the probe is continuously beaming back data to mission researchers, who are analyzing data sent by the probe.

The new round of photos has revealed several things about the dwarf planet, which were not known to NASA scientists.
