PlayNow Music Service Announced By Sony Ericsson
Tuesday saw the Mobile Phone Company Sony Ericsson, making the announcement that a new music service called PalyNow Plus will soon be launched, which will let the users download unlimited music.
A press release issued by the company said that this new service will be powered by British music-download firm Omnifone. The music will be featured from all four of the largest recording labels.
Last year, Nokia, the rival of Sony Ericsson, launched a music service called Comes with Music, and now PlayNow Plus will compete with it. To add more, PlayNow will offer more complete music library as compared to Nokia and moreover, Comes with Music has yet to be joined by EMI.
However, it is being learned that Sony Ericsson may not give away as much music as Nokia. The press release issued by the company informs that initially, as many as 5 million songs would be offered by the company, which will be protected by digital rights management software, and the length would also be kept according to the contract. Once this contract is over, a number of DRM-free songs will be allowed to be kept by the company.
“PlayNow Plus users can keep 100 DRM-free songs for each six months of their PlayNow contract. In comparison, Nokia allows users to download as much music as they want for the 12 months and keep those songs forever. The music is indeed swaddled in copy-protection schemes,” reported Martin Blomkvist, Sony Ericsson's manager of content acquisition.
The music-subscription market, which currently is dropping, is aimed to be boosted by these two services.
