Piracy costs Indian TV and film business $959 million, says reportA recent study conducted by the research firm PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that piracy put a whopping dent of $959 million and 571,000 jobs in the Indian media industry, in 2008.

The study titled `Economic Contribution of Indian Film and Television Industry' also suggested that the Indian film and television business did a business of $6.2 billion in 2008.

The industry created around 1.8 million jobs in the country, the same year.

But had it not been for piracy, the industry would have raked in much more moolah and would have created a lot more jobs.

Dan Glickman, the Chairman of Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) stated that though we all feel good to receive things for free, it is important that as a civilized citizen we pay for certain product and services.

He suggested that the solution to piracy is that as an industry it is required to offer people products at reasonable prices in a hassle free manner.

Another study shows that online piracy is very high in India. The study rates India among top 10 countries in the world where stealing film and TV content is highest.

For instance, Shahid Kapoor's Kaminey was downloaded form internet around 350,000 times (including India and abroad).
