Pilot presses hijack alarm after passengers try to enter cockpit
A pilot of an Air India flight scheduled to fly from Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE to Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala, pressed the hijack button in panic after allegedly some angry passengers tried to enter the cockpit.
The passengers were reportedly angry over the decision of the airline to divert the flight to Thiruvananthapuram instead of its original destination, Kochin. Officials at the airport said that angry and frustrated passengers entered the cockpit after waiting for four long hours in the plane to be flown to Kochin.
AS the passengers tried to enter the cockpit, the pilot pressed the hijack button, which resulted in an alert across all the airports in the country. Following the sounding of the alarm, the police and other security personnel surrounded the aircraft that was parked at the city's airport at the time.
Officials say that the diversion of the plane from its original destination was due to bad weather conditions. It is also believed the passengers refused to get off the plane even after repeated requests from the airline staff.
India civil aviation regulator, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered into the incidence and many believe that pressing the hijack button in this incidence was an overreaction by the pilot.
