Miliband: Terrorism threatens Pakistan's territorial integrity

David MilibandBrussels - Terrorism poses "a direct threat" to Pakistan's territorial integrity, Britain's David Miliband warned Wednesday as NATO foreign ministers met to discuss the alliance's anti-Taliban operations in neighbouring Afghanistan.

"There is a direct threat to the integrity of the Pakistani state that is posed by terrorism," Miliband said as he arrived at the alliance's headquarter in Brussels.

Miliband was commenting on last week's coordinated terrorist attacks in India's business capital of Mumbai, which have left nearly 200 people dead.

British Foreign Secretary Miliband hopes for stability in Lebanon

David MilibandBeirut - Visiting British Foreign Secretary David Miliband started official talks with Lebanese leaders Wednesday, saying he hoped that stability would prevail in Lebanon until the upcoming parliamentary election due in May 2009.

"The entire world is looking at the upcoming parliamentary elections where politics, not violence, should determine Lebanon's future relations," Miliband said after meeting Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.

Miliband urges Syria to continue Israel peace talks

Damascus  - Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband urged Syria on Tuesday to continue efforts to reach a peace deal with Israel and accused the Syrian-backed Palestinian militant group Hamas of disrupting peace.

"Syria has a big potential role to play in stability in the Middle East. It can be a force for stability or it can be a force for instability," Miliband said.

Syria and Israel have conducted four rounds of indirect peace talks mediated by Turkey since May 2008. A fifth round of talks was postponed due to the leadership crisis within Israel following the resignation of former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Britain says it will raise target on greenhouse emission

David MilibandLondon  - Britain will sign up to a legally-binding pledge to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, compared with 1990 levels, raising the target from an earlier 60 per cent, Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband announced Thursday.

He said the move would make Britain the first country in the world to commit to such far-reaching cuts in the production of carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for global warming.
