Pakistani troops kill at least 15 militants in tribal district

PakistanIslamabad - At least 15 Taliban militants were killed Saturday when paramilitary troops repulsed an attack on their checkpoint in Pakistan's restive north-western tribal district of Mohmand. From 80 to 90 militants attacked the post but retreated after heavy fighting, Major Farooq Ahmad of the paramilitary Mohmand Rifles said by telephone.

"The militants received heavy casualties," he said. "Our sources said between 15 and 20 militants were killed in the action. Five soldiers were also injured."

Military helicopters evacuated the wounded soldiers tohospital where two of them were said to be in critical condition.

Mohmand is one of the seven tribal districts believed to be safe havens for Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters.

Pakistani security forces have fought rebels in Mohmand for several weeks, killing dozens of insurgents.
