Pakistani soldiers escape roadside bombing, one civilian killed
Islamabad - A roadside bomb targeting a military convoy in Pakistan's troubled Swat district on Friday killed at least one civilian and wounded two others, an official said.
The remote-controlled blast took place in the Takhtaband area on the outskirts of Mingora, the main town of Swat where government troops are battling hardcore insurgents to quell a rebellion spearheaded by local radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah.
"One pedestrian was killed and two more were injured in the attack," a military spokesman said.
The security forces did not suffered any casualties as electronic radio jamming equipment delayed the explosion, he said.
Swat used to be a tourist haven until 2007 when supporters of Fazlullah tried to enforce strict Taliban-style laws, including ban on girls' education, and set up a parallel judicial system in the region.
Military action against the militants triggered a wave of attacks on security forces and politicians, killing hundreds of people. (dpa)
