Packet One and Yota sounding highly desirous to enter Wimax market of India
The flourishing telecommunications, broadband, Wimax market of India is becoming great magnet for the foreign operators. Now, Packet One Networks (P1) – the converged telecommunications, broadband and Wimax service provider in Malaysia, and the Russian telecom operator Yota are sounding highly desirous to enter the Indian market.
Packet One and Yota are reportedly in serious negotiations with several Indian companies in order to make their way into the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) market of India. The two operators expected to be bidders in the WiMAX spectrum auctions, scheduled to be held later this year in India.
Recently, Packet One Chief Executive Officer, Micheal Li said, "We will bid in India's WiMAX auctions long with a local partner." Li added, "The mobile broadband opportunity in India is immense. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh together serve a broadband population of a little over two million which shows the tremendous room for growth."
Yota's director, business development, Yegor Ivanov said, "We are open to coming in as a consultant with a minority stake or as a majority player bringing in the financial investment, experience and team to the Indian market." Ivanov told that Yota is in talks with MTNL to launch its WiMAX rollout in Delhi and Mumbai.
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a telecommunications technology, which facilitates wireless transmission of data, using different transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. India is expected to become the largest WiMAX market in the Asia-Pacific by 2013. In the next four years, India is expected to become a US$13-billion (RM44 billion) market, with 20 percent of the global WiMAX users.
