Official results show Sandinistas win Nicaraguan local elections
Managua - Nicaragua's capital Managua and 104 other cities and counties will be ruled by Sandinistas, according to official final election results in the disputed local elections held November 9.
Candidates from President Daniel Ortega's Sandinista party won 105 of 146 ares in the vote, the government said late Thursday. Managua will be ruled by three-time world boxing champion Alexis Arguello, who beat Liberal Party candidate and former foreign minister Eduardo Montealegre.
The opposition again criticized the results, which they deem fraudulent, and said they would attempt to have them annulled in Parliament in the coming weeks. Opposition led protests since the vote have been met with violence from Ortega supporters. (dpa)
