Ofcom and SamKnows to study the broadband speed
Ofcom's idea to pull down various broadband companies, with hardcore evidence against their speeds, gained weight when it signed a contract with the broadband monitoring company- SamKnows.
SamKnows expects volunteers to come up with the data which will provide exact speed of the broadband services.
In the latest report of Ofcom, , it was found that UK homes on an average had download speeds of 4.1Mbps compared with ISPs' advertised speed of up to 7.1Mbps on an average. These figures are for the last year.
Besides this, the studies brought out several other discrepancies.
SamKnow's Chief Executive Alex Salter said in a statement, "What we're looking to measure in the forthcoming project is how this ISP performance will improve as consumers switch to services which are being advertised as significantly faster".
Participants, who wish to sign via SamKnows's website, will receive a 'White Box' monitoring device that will be installed in their homes. The box will be connected to the user's network and will track the performance of their broadband connection.
The process starts this year and will go on till April 2012.
