Ancient snakebite treatment may harbour cure for HIV

Sydney, September 25 : Scientists from Australia, Europe and the US have found that a Chinese herb, which has been used to treat snakebites and boils for centuries, has the potential to fight HIV/AIDS.

The researchers say that an Asian violet known as Viola yedoensis contains tiny proteins that appear to kill off infected cells. Such anti-HIV and anti-bacterial qualities, say the researchers, make the plant a target for new drug therapies to treat the HIV virus.

New Delhi, Sept 25 : Jana Krishnamurthy, the former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), passed away of renal failure today at a hospital in Chennai. He was 79.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has condoled the death of Krishnamurthy.

In his condolence message, Vajpayee said that he was deeply saddened by Krishnamurthy’s demise.

Glaxo’s ‘Cervarix’ Gets EU Authorization

London: GlaxoSmithKline PLC’s cervical cancer vaccine ‘Cervarix’ has received nod for sale across the European Union.

The vaccine has been sanctioned to avert pre-cancerous wounds and cervical cancer caused by human papillomavirus types 16 and 18 that held responsible for over 70 per cent of all cervical cancer cases.

The world’s second-biggest drug manufacturer said that the indication for Cervarix is based on statistics developed by clinical studies in girls and young women between 10 and 25.

BJP supports 33% Quota for Women

Bhopal: The BJP stated that it would set aside 33% seats for women at all levels of the party hierarchy.

The decision came almost eight years after the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress reserve one-third of seats in the party group for women.

L.K. Advani, opposition leader told that the BJP would also reserve 33% seats for women in Assembly and parliamentary elections provided a law made it obligatory for all political parties.

As it showed off its gender-sensitivity, the BJP took a swipe at the Left.
