The beverage industry has welcomed the move from the government. Chancellor George Osborne said that it has cut the price of a beer pint by a penny for the second year and also froze duties on cider, a move that will boost flood-hit West Country. The duty freeze on scotch took a political turn as the Chancellor said that it a "British success story".

According to the latest figures released, the UK's unemployment fell by 63,000 in the three months to January to 7.2 per cent.

During the month of January along, the unemployment rate fell to the level of 6.9 per cent, which is lower than 7 per cent threshold set by the Bank of England for raising interest rates. Auto giant Volvo Group on Wednesday announced a joint venture with S. M. Kannapa Automobile Private Limited to produce a range of UD buses in the value segment.

The Swedish auto manufacturer said it would invest Rs 125 crore and hold a 15 per cent stake in the joint venture.

The twelve-metre-long UD buses will be manufactured at a new facility situated between Hosakote and Kolar. The manufacturing facility will commence operation later this year, and the first batch of buses is expected to be rolled out of the facility by the end of this year.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reportedly allowed five private-sector banks to import gold, taking a significant step towards easing of tough curbs that it imposed on the precious metal last year to salsh the country's current account deficit (CAD).

The private-sector banks that have been permitted to import gold are: HDFC Bank, Yes Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and IndusInd Bank. Two people familiar with the development confirmed the names of the banks, but they didn't want to be named because they weren't authorized to speak on the matter.

Good buying was observed in technology, media and entertainment (TECK) and IT sectors, while selling pressure was observed in capital goods and banking sectors.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 21,797.61 points, was trading at 21,817.98 points in the pre-noon session, down 14.88 points or 0.07 percent from the previous day's close at 21,832.86 points.
