Syrian Army announces new offensive on rebel-held Aleppo

New York [US], Sept. 23 : The Syrian army has announced a major new offensive on rebel-held eastern Aleppo after international powers with a stake in country's civil war failed to revive a collapsed ceasefire during diplomatic talks in New York.

The offensive was announced as the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, met his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and other foreign ministers on the margins of a United Nations summit in New York.

Kerry declared "we cannot continue on the same path any longer" but said he had given Russia another chance to come up with "immediate and significant steps" to stop violence, including the end of Russian and Syrian government bombing of opposition areas.

Smoking leaves footprint on human genome

Washington D.C. [USA], Sept.22 : A new research says that smoking leaves its impression on the human genome in the form of DNA methylation, a process by which cells control gene activity.

The new findings suggest that DNA methylation could be an important sign that reveals an individual's smoking history and could provide researchers with potential targets for new therapies.

"These results are important because methylation, as one of the mechanisms of the regulation of gene expression, affects what genes are turned on, which has implications for the development of smoking-related diseases," said author Stephanie J. London, adding, "Equally important is our finding that even after someone stops smoking, we still see the effects of smoking on their DNA."
