Glial- new player in feeding behaviour

Washington D.C. [USA], Oct. 19 : A new study has found out that brain cells called glial cells play a critical role in controlling appetite and feeding behaviour.

In a study by of mice, the MIT neuroscientists found that activating these cells stimulates overeating, and that when the cells are suppressed, appetite is also suppressed.

The findings could offer scientists a new target for developing drugs against obesity and other appetite-related disorders, the researchers said.

The study is also the latest in recent years to implicate glial cells in important brain functions. Until about 10 years ago, glial cells were believed to play more of a supporting role for neurons.

Obama tears into Trump over 'rigged' election claim, asks him to quit 'whining'

Washington D.C., Oct. 19 : President Barack Obama on Tuesday branded Donald Trump's claims of a rigged election as destructive to American democracy, asserting that the Republican presidential nominee was whining about an invented conspiracy.

"You start whining before the game's even over?" Obama said during a news conference in the White House Rose Garden, adding that Trump's claim is "not based on facts", CNN reported.

Look out for physical root of depression!

Washington D.C. [USA], Oct. 19 : A new research by the University of Warwick, UK, and Fudan University, China has taken the understanding of the physical root of depression a step forward.

The study shows that depression affects the part of the brain which is implicated in non-reward, the lateral orbitofrontal cortex, so that sufferers of the disease feel a sense of loss and disappointment associated with not receiving rewards.

This area of the brain, which becomes active when rewards are not received, is also connected with the part of the brain which is involved in one's sense of self, thus potentially leading to thoughts of personal loss and low self-esteem.

Hormone levels in hair can affect IVF success rate: Study

Washington D.C. [USA], Oct. 19 : A new study has revealed that the levels of a hormone, when measured in hair, can significantly predict the likelihood of pregnancy in women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment.

The new study by The University of Nottingham found that elevated levels of the so-called 'stress hormone' cortisol measured in hair were associated with almost a third less chance of conceiving.

This technique enables doctors to measure cumulative hormonal function over the previous three to six months and, as such, provides a more reliable measure of hormonal function compared to other techniques using saliva, blood and urine that measure only short term levels of the hormone.
