Yonkers officials find Legionnaire’s bacteria in Riverside High School cooling tower

Yonkers officials have found bacteria responsible for causing Legionnaires' disease in a Riverside High School cooling tower. Jerilynne Fierstein, a spokeswoman for Yonkers school, announced only a few weeks before the school year is set to begin that a possible outbreak has forced the cancellation of the orientation of ninth-grade students on Friday and Thursday.

"The facility was closed immediately out of an abundance of caution to allow for the proper disinfecting and cleaning process to occur. Riverside was reopened today and the cooling tower does not pose any health risk to students, administrators, staff or other members of the public", Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement.

West Nile virus: Health officials urge people to protect themselves from mosquito bites

People should make efforts to protect themselves from mosquitoes as 20 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed so far in 2015, say state health officials.

A report was released earlier this week to show that 10 of the cases were related to neuroinvasive disease, two to West Nile fever and eight were to asymptomatic, said the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

"It's critical for adults and children to wear mosquito repellent at all times while outdoors. Whether your children are playing sports, your family is outside grilling or you're doing yard work, be sure to protect yourself and your family", said state health officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry.

Fathers Who Share Childcare Duties Enjoy Better Love Life: Study

Researchers in a recently conducted study have revealed that if both the partners share childcare duties, they enjoy a better love life and live a healthier marriage, rather than only one parent taking care of the child.

Sociologists, for their study, studied more than 900 married couples and found that those who split the childcare equally had better and more frequent sex. Not only this, the study researchers also noted that such couples also had a happier marriage overall.

As per the study researchers, when women were mostly or wholly responsible for childcare, where they took more than 60% of the responsibility, the quality of the relationship and satisfaction with sex tended to be lower, for both husband and wife.

Help from doctors to lose weight is the best strategy

People who diet under the supervision of a medical professional have better chances of losing weight than those who adopt a plan of their own, says a new study. A dieting recommendation from scientists at Johns Hopkins University appears simple, but people have sought great help from it in losing weight.

A university press release says that 300 obese people in a federally funded clinical trial sought help from a professional and lost significantly more weight than those who followed diet on their own.

The study recorded answers of participants while rating how helpful their doctors were as they navigated a weight loss program over a two-year period. Findings of the study have been published in the August 21 edition of Patient Education and Counseling.

Cosmic Neutrinos hold valuable information

Scientists have termed the lately discovered high-energy neutrinos to be of great significance. Being found by the scientists at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica, these particles are from high energy sources like black holes and exploding stars.

Scientists explained that cosmic neutrinos are considered to be mysterious, ghost-like particles that have travelled across the galaxy from beyond the outer reaches of the universe.

Scientists said that when these samples are combined with previous IceCube measurements then they allow the most accurate measurements till date about the energy spectrum and composition of the extraterrestrial neutrino flux.

Megabots launches Kickstarter Campaign to Raise Funds to Upgrade Its Robot

Megabots, Inc. has launched its Kickstarter campaign to raise half a million dollars to upgrade its existing Mk.II, a 12,000 pound, 15-foot-tall combat robot that fires cannonball-sized paintballs at a speed of 120 MPH.

The fearsome robot’s one arm is a missile launcher and the other a cannon. Its inventors, Gui Cavalcanti and Matt Oehrlein, have already signed it up for a historic duel. According to them, they have to spend some time in transforming their creation into a more nimble fighting machine in order to win the battle.

Cavalcanti and Oehrlein, 29-year-old co-founders of Berkeley-based MegaBots Inc., are hoping to fulfill another human desire i.e. ferocious, gladiator-style entertainment.
