Uttar Pradesh raises the price of Sugarcane to Rs. 140 per quintal

On Saturday, Revision of Sugarcane prices were done in the UP, where increment in procurement price from sugar mills was done and henceforth raised from Rs.125 to Rs.140 per quintal. On this the Chief Minister Mayawati said, “The fixation of price was done after an exhaustive study of various factors and in consultation with all the parties involved.”

Owners of sugar mills have most of the time been at loggerheads with the Government whenever the latter has decided to fix prices of sugarcane. However, the Chief Secretary assured that no such battle will be fought as the mill owners, sugarcane growers and market experts were taken into confidence while deciding upon this. He added that it was for the first time that any government in the State has taken such action as to bring forth the people concerned it together at a meeting and decide upon an issue and there was no reason to worry.

The writ petitions forwarded by some of the sugar mill owners before the Supreme Court and Allahabad Court were still due as against the prices fixed by the State Government for the year 2006-07 at Rs.110 per quintal and for the year 2007-08 at Rs.125.
