President Pratibha Patil to present Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar awards

New Delhi, June 5 : President Pratibha Patil to present Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar awardsPresident Pratibha Patil will present three Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar awards and one Young Environmentalist award on the occasion of World Environment Day today.

The Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar (IGPP) is given in recognition to those who have made a measurable and major impact in the protection of environment.

Cash prize, a silver lotus trophy and a citation will be given to two individuals and one organisation.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests received total number of 190 nominations for the year 2005 out of which three have been selected. The Ministry has awarded 32 IGPP since 1987.

The Ministry will launch the Environment Ambassador Campaign on this occasion. It will also present three books -- ‘Animal Discoveries- 2007’, Zoological Survey of India and ‘Plant Discoveries-2007’, Botanical Survey of India to the President.

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), also created in 1972, uses World Environment Day to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action. (ANI)
