Air on Mars Is Leaking Away, say Scientists
Scientists since long have been trying to understand why the Red Planet is so warm, but it seems they will very soon get an answer to it. The scientists said the new readings from NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission (MAVEN) could help explain the disappearance of the atmosphere.
Scientists said that the air from the atmosphere of Mars is leaking at about half a pound a second and spread into the space.
Earlier it was thought that the atmosphere of the Red Planet’s was far thicker than that of earth’s atmosphere today.
The new reading from MEVEN shows that when Mars get hit by a solar storm caused due to heavily charged particles coming from the Sun its upper atmosphere gets ruptured very quickly.
Researchers hope that the new readings could help them known how Mars reached to its current condition. Further in explanation researchers said that during its starting days the Sun had several solar storm eruptions, which might have played a major role to throw atoms out of Mars’ atmosphere.
Bruce M. Jakosky, a scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado also the principal investigator for the Maven mission said, “What this tells us is loss through space has been an important process”.
Researchers think the answer to what actually happened to atmosphere of Mars will also help them understand how Mars got this warm.
The team presented their findings from Maven in four scientific papers published on Thursday in the journal Science.
