Californians to Vote Next Year on Condoms for Actors in Pornographic Movies
Residents of California will decide in 2016 whether porn films' actors have to wear condoms while shooting a porn movie. Whatever Californians will decide, it is going to affect the state's adult film industry.
The secretary of state's office announced on Wednesday that the plan has qualified for the ballot, and in November 2016, people in California will vote on it. The initiative qualified after its supporters succeeded in getting about 366,000 valid petition signatures, as per the office.
The California Secretary of State said the initiative qualified for voting after getting over 500,000 signatures. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation leaders submitted the signatures. The foundation proposed the initiative for ballot as the 'California Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act'.
If Californians agree on the initiative, actors in porn films will have to use condoms during intercourse. Adding to that, adult film producers have to pay for performer vaccinations and medical examinations. They also have to get a state health license before shooting porn film. According to state officials, "It would cost the state several million dollars each year to administrate if the initiative passed, but it would also possibly save local health departments money".
Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Health Foundation, said the foundation is confident that Californians will vote to pass the initiative. It is not the first time when the foundation started such campaign. It campaigned for similar law in Los Angeles County, which was supported by voters in 2012.
