ISS Crew getting ready for spacewalk on Wednesday
International Space Station (ISS) astronauts, Expedition 45 commander Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren, a flight engineer, are gearing up and evaluating procedures for a planned six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk Wednesday outside the space station.
The excursion's key goals include greasing of the snare mechanism on one end of the robot arm of the lab; installation of insulation on a high-energy physics experiment; removal of insulation from a stowed electrical distribution box; and laying power and data cables required by a new docking mechanism that will be installed later for helping new commercial crew ferry craft use.
The astronaut with 213 days into about yearlong mission and veteran of 3 previous space flights, Scott Kelly, is going to make his first spacewalk with Lindgren, who is midway through his first mission.
To make them identified and differentiated, Kelly, call sign EV-1, will wear a NASA spacesuit having red stripes and will use helmet camera No. 18, while Lindgren, EV-2, is going to wear an unmarked suit and will use helmetcam 17.
In a recent NASA interview, Lindgren said that the thought of entering this miniature spaceship and travelling outside was incredible. Lindgren added, "It is really the opportunity to reflect on the fact that a little over 50 years ago, Ed White II did the first American spacewalk out of Gemini 4. We're kind of living as a part of that legacy".
Kelly was also excited by the prospect of his first spacewalk, but he reduced its significance by saying that 'it's not like it's going to be culmination of my professional life or anything like that'.
