Empire: ‘The Martian’ mixes smarts, laughs, weird character bits and tension on a huge canvas

Since the release on October 2, 2015, ‘The Martian’ has done a great job in this latest Hollywood depiction of Mars with an estimated collection of 143 million dollars. According to Box Office Mojo, so far worldwide, it's looking like around 319 million.

All such kind of stuff started with Director Ridley Scott’s 1979's ‘Alien’, and now the director has once again tapped into the fascination of the audience with outer space. Even the critics have been kind most of the time.

Empire reported that ‘The Martian’ is anchored by another great turn from Matt Damon. It is a mixture of smarts, laughs, weird character bits and tension on a big canvas. All this has resulted into Scott’s most purely enjoyable film for long times to come.

Wall Street Journal reported that even if an individual knows the premise, lost in space crossed with Robinson Crusoe in lower gravity, it is not going to make the individual ready for the extraordinary variety and complexity of this sci-fi extravaganza.

Variety reported that ‘The Martian’ is an action-packed and rigorously realistic outer-space survival story wherein Matt Damon is playing the role of a NASA botanist trapped and left on Mars after his crew mates have to abort mission due to a sandstorm.

Over the years, there were many other films in this genre but they were not been that fortunate with the critics. Many Hollywood memorable movies were set on the planet Mars or featured a Martian.
