Need to have stronger regulation on Dietary supplements

If you are among those who favor dietary supplements then please read on. This latest study published in The New England Journal of Medicine has found that at least 23,000 Americans are year visit emergency room and 2,000 at least need to be hospitalized owing to dietary supplements.

The researchers have said that the number of patients could be more as not every person reports that he is taking supplements when he visits doctor. The study researchers have based their estimated on the data from 63 hospitals from 2004 to 2013.

The reports were retrieved using a surveillance system from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The researchers have even studied side effects from the supplements from pharmaceuticals.

Study’s co-author Andrew Geller, a medical officer in CDC's division of health care quality promotion, said that there are many supplement users who have been taking the supplements without realizing the harm they can cause.

The researchers came to know that around 20% of supplement-related visits to ER were by children who took the products without supervision. Talking about the reason behind emergency room visits, around 25% of them were related to weight-loss products and 10% were linked to energy supplements.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition said that dietary supplements are used by 150 million Americans. Douglas MacKay, senior vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs for the group, has affirmed that the study has overestimated the number of supplement-related ER visits.
