Former Blue Bell workers unveil about hygiene conditions inside plant

Former Blue Bell Ice Cream workers have claimed that they have raised concerns to management about conditions at their factory in Texas that was linked to an outbreak of listeria, but the latter has ignored the complaints.

In the outbreak, 10 people fell sick and three lost their lives. In the incident, the company had to recall 8 million gallons of ice cream. In April, the company recalled its products and during that time, its loyal customers supported the company and even prayed for the return.

One of the former workers, Terry Schultz, said that he used to operate a machine at the Brenham Blue Bell factory. He said there were times when there was all ice cream all over the floor in the factory. Then, there were situation when the machines would haywire owing to which the product would continue to run through conveyor belt and drop on floor.

To clean it, there was need to stop machine, which could slow production. Therefore, workers were left to work on floors filled with ice cream, creating an environment where bacteria could early flourish. When he complained the matter to his heads then also nothing was done.

Five-year Blue Bell veteran Gerald Bland shared that he has operated a fruit feeder in the plant. There were many problems at the plant. Listeria thrives in wet environment and Bland said that there was water everywhere. The story is one in a series CBS News done on Blue Bell.
