Moon Express plans to send Lander to Moon in 2017
Moon Express, an aerospace company based in California, has been planning to send a lander to the moon and become the first private company to achieve the milestone. Currently, the company is working with a satellite-making company for the mission.
There are reports that the aerospace company, formed by some Silicon Valley and space entrepreneurs, struck a contract of about $30 million with New Zealand-based company Rocket Lab for its moon landing mission. The mission could begin in 2017, as per reports.
According to the contract between two companies, there will be two initial launches to land MX-1 lander on the surface of moon. There could be three more launches after that, whose details are yet to be revealed. The company wants multiple launches to make sure that a successful landing can be achieved.
Bob Richards from Moon Express said it is very hard to imagine life in space. Any person who goes on a space mission learn quickly how to be humble, Richards added. According to the company, the successful landing of the MX-1 will encourage other private companies to use spacecraft for lunar deliveries in near future.
Rocket Lab is currently building the Electron rocket intended for moon mission launches. Talking about moon mission, Richards said, "The moon was only reachable by superpowers, but the moon is right there. It's a sister world to Earth, so it's a very convenient place for us to go and learn how to travel in space".
"We were at a bonfire and then we drove home to get the kids to bed. I kept hoping in and out of the house to see the Moon. The kids didn't go to bed until the clouds came in at around 10:20 but we did see the whole thing. It was beautiful I was grateful for the clear night sky. I kept trying to get a shot here and there as I peeked on it (my favorite show was on so it was a tough one lol). I only got a few good images and the clouds came in immediately after the shot I sent you so I was bummed that I didn't get it fully covered by the shadows (the full "Blood Moon") but Im happy with this."
