Tourists preventing Sea Turtles from Nesting in Costa Rica
People are visiting Ostional Wildlife Refuge of Costa Rica to see a number of olive ridley sea turtles coming out of the water to lay their eggs. The numbers of tourists visiting the national park situated on the West Coast are increasing with every passing day. Rowdy tourists want to take pictures and give company to the reptile, but they forget that the creatures don’t need them, and just want some space. People gathering on the beach are actually disturbing the nesting sea turtle.
According to a report of Yahoo News Canada's Daily Buzz, hundreds of tourists have visited the beaches this week to get a glimpse of pregnant sea turtle coming ashore to lay their eggs. To handle the crowd, national police officers were called by park rangers. Before officers could help park rangers and push visitor back, a number of pregnant turtles turned back to ocean without laying their eggs in sand.
Tourists were seen taking selfies with the creatures. Some people were even touching the turtles, or resting their kids on top of pregnant turtles. Leonel Delgado, Ministry for the Environment and Energy workers union secretary, said, “Visitors' actions had ‘a negative impact’. In addition to threatening the health and safety of the sea turtles, the overwhelming tourist presence also threatened the future of the sea turtle population”.
Costa Rican authorities said that only licensed and experienced tour guides will be allowed to visit the beaches in the near future.
