Deforestation taking place at faster pace than previously thought

A study has warned about increasing level of deforestation. Study researchers said that tropical forests of the size of India will be destroyed in the next 35 years. Deforestation level has surpassed the level previously thought.

Researchers from the Washington-based Center for Global Development have taken the help of satellite imagery and data from 100 nations to reach at the above level prediction. The researchers have affirmed that 289m hectares of tropical forests will be cut down by 2050.

Study researchers said that if the current conditions continued then tropical deforestation will add 169 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 2050. Environmental economist Jonah Busch said that bringing a decline in tropical deforestation is a cost effective measure to lessen the level of climate change.

One of the biggest reasons of tropical deforestation is industrial agriculture that is done to produce commodities like soy and palm oil. If no changes are made then the rate of deforestation would increase through 2020 and 2030 and will speed up in 2040.

As per UN climate change experts, the world has the limit to burn one trillion tonnes of carbon as only then global temperature will rise below 2 degrees Celsius, which is the maximum limit to avoid the catastrophic climate change.

Many nations have success stories to share like Brazil, which has decreased deforestation in the Amazon rainforest by 80% over a decade with the help of satellite monitoring and increased law enforcement.
