US Senator Bill Nelson is Cancer-Free now

A normal medical exam brought negative news for US Senator Bill Nelson that he had prostate cancer. Earlier this month, he underwent prostate cancer removal surgery and is now said to be free from cancer.

Nelson's wife Grace said the pathology report clearly shows that Nelson is free from cancer. She said, "We're humbled and grateful for all your prayers and well wishes. Bill is raring to go but the doctors won't let him out of the house for a few more days".

Nelson's surgery was carried out in Washington, D. C. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men in the US. Elderly and the ones having family history of the cancer are at an increased risk to suffer from the disease. African-American men are at more risk to suffer from the disease in comparison to White Americans.

To cite an example, a man whose father or brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer has up to three times increased risk of developing the disease. Every year, around 220,000 men are diagnosed with it and more than 20,000 of them have chances to die from the disease.

The ones whose cancer has been detected at an early stage have almost 100% chance of survival. Amongst all the options, surgery is the most effective for the ones who are healthy and also for those whose cancer has not spread outside the prostate.

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, biologic therapy, hormone therapy and bisphosphonate therapy are the other options to treat prostate cancer.
