Wind turbine owners received £1.2 billion in consumer subsidies

Wind turbine owners received £1.2 billion in consumer subsidiesAccording to the latest figures released, the wind turbine owners in the UK received £1.2 billion in consumer subsidies during the previous year.

The industry supports 12,000 jobs and the supplement on electricity bills mean that each wind farm job is effectively subsidised by £154,000. The new figures are a severe blow to the wind industry and UK's plans for renewable energy. The wind farm industry is also facing opposition from residents in the coastal areas. About 3,000 turbines are expected to be built across the country in future, according to estimates.

John Hayes, the Tory Energy Minister recently expressed that the UK already has enough of wind farms. He reportedly said that says "enough is enough" and that the country is "peppered" by the farms. The minister has ordered a new analysis into the wind farms and their impact on the local communities.

Lord Teverson, the head for energy and climate change for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, responded by saying that the subsidies are not aimed at job creation in the sector but to allow the UK to remain ahead in the renewable technology industry.
