Kingfisher cancels several flights as engineers strike

Kingfisher cancels several flights as engineers strikeSeveral Kingfisher Airlines flights will not take off on Monday, October 1, as the beleaguered carrier has canceled those flights due to employee unrest.

Kingfisher confirmed in a statement that it was cancelling several flights as a section of engineers had not been reporting to work over the last fortnight, and now they had also been threatening other employees who were reporting to work as usual.

The carrier said it cancelled the flights to mitigate the impact of those anticipated disruptions.

Announcing the cancellation of the flights, Kingfishers said, "With a view to mitigating the impact of these anticipated disruptions, we are proactively cancelling several flights across our network for October 1, 2012."

According to a Bloomberg TV India report, around 300 Kingfisher engineers would go on a strike on Monday.

The latest cancellations of flights show that worries for Kingfisher are far from over. The carrier's net loss more than doubled from Rs. 1,027 crore in 2010-11 to Rs. 2,328 crore in 2011-12. As on March 31, Kingfisher Airlines' total long-term and short-term borrowings stood at Rs. 5,695 crore and Rs. 2,335 crore respectively.
