IMF urges industry players to push for reforms

Christine LagardeChristine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director has urged the industry players in India take steps to make sure that reform process in the Indian economy is implemented.

She said that the reforms to offer new opportunities in entrepreneurship and innovation to boost economic growth in the country. She said that the Indian industry is does not fight for is stance forcefully due to the fear of disrespecting the powerful political establishment.

However, the trend is changing and more business leaders like Adi Godrej, Wipro chief Aziiz Premji and Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata are increasingly speaking up against the government inaction and asking for speedy implementation of the reforms in the Indian economy.

Lagarde met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed with him various issues including India's role in global economic affairs. She said that India and China are big drivers of global growth.

"I conveyed to Prime Minister Singh our appreciation of India's role as an important voice to the world on behalf of the interests of emerging and developing economies. We welcome that India has approved its participation in the IMF's 2010 quota and governance reforms, and we encourage all other members to help complete the process expeditiously," the IMF said.
