Tough measures to guard against HFMD pay off for one kindergarten
According to recent statistics, the figures for cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) have touched 509 in the previous week: an increase by 38 from the week before that.
Though this figure is still below the warning levels, the Health Ministry wants the public to remain vigilant.
One of the kindergartens taking strict measures to keep HFMD at a distance is PCF Punggol East Education Centre. The kindergarten at Rivervale Walk had witnessed seven cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in 2008, following which it was ordered to shut down for 10 days.
Ever since, the school has raised its standards of hygiene. It is a rule now that each student must undergo temperature checks daily and should strictly wash their hands before entering class. Even the toys are washed twice a week.
In fact, the professional cleaning services have been raised from twice to eight times a year.
Even the cleaners as well as the teachers are made to clean the class after every session. The cost of cleaning increased by 20 per cent, though the school says considers the money well spent, as there was only one HFMD case this year.
