The Ruanui Hospital Trust seemingly has resulted in to a voluntary liquidation which helps abandon patients and staff, and leaves the vicinity without a public hospital.
A protest march followed on State Highway 1 happening right through the centre of the town, with residents voicing out their anger.
Les Rowlands of the Taihape Concerned Citizens group said, "I feel completely let down because we have worked as a community to support and maintain this facility."

A nurse there, Donna Wood, told ONE News, that she is not satisfied with the present condition. "I'm gutted for myself and I'm gutted for the residents& I'm gutted for the future residents of Ruanui home," said Wood.
Wendy Campbell, daughter of Ruanui Hospital residents Joan and Bob Campbell, said her parents had been told they should soon look out for a new residence and others were given as little as two weeks’ notice.
