The Mollohan family loses W.Va. primary for the first time in 42 years
According to the reports, voters in West Virginia's Democratic primary Tuesday wrested the 1st Congressional District seat from the Mollohan family for the first time in 42 years.
State Sen. Michael Oliverio soundly defeated incumbent Democrat Alan Mollohan. With 420 of 670 precincts counted, Oliverio had 25,524 votes to 19,754 for Mollohan, the Wheeling News-Register reported.
It was further reported that Mollohan, the first Democratic House member to lose in the midterm elections, was seeking his 15th term in the U. S. House. His father Robert held the seat from 1968 to 1982.
Wheeling businessman David McKinley won the Republican nomination easily in a six-person field. With 386 precincts counted, McKinley had 7,668 votes to 6,640 for Mac Warner, 5,854 for Sarah Minear, 2,128 for Thomas Stark, 1,086 for Patricia VanGilder Levenson and 851 for Cindy Hall, the News-Register said.
The Charleston Gazette reported U. S. Rep. Nick Rahall easily won the Democratic nomination for an 18th term in West Virginia's 3rd District.
It was also reported that Rahall easily defeated challenger Bruce Barilla of Bluefield. With about half the votes counted, Rahall had 23,979 votes to 12,127 for Barilla. (With Inputs from Agencies)
