CWG Security a ‘big’ concern: Sports Minister
The Union Sports Minister M. S. Gill has said that security is a big concern in preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the government is leaving no stone unturned conduct a safe event.
'Security is a big concern of us. We have spent Rs. 350 crore on CCTV cameras that will be installed across the city,' said Gill. He was speaking at an event after the inauguration of Indo- Bangladesh Bangla Games.
The minister expressed that Hockey World Cup, and the Commonwealth shooting, archery and boxing championships gave the opportunity to the government to test its systems.
Regarding the completion of the venues for the event, he said that most of the venues will be ready by April except the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium which will host the opening and closing ceremony along with athletic competitions.
He further said that the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium that hosted Hockey World Cup recently won praises from many of the participating nations.
In another development, the CWG Director General V K Verma has clarified that the budget of the games did not overshoot and the entire cost of the games was Rs 10,000-crore.
The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee expects to earn around three billion rupees by selling television rights during the games. The committee has signed up various partners for sponsorship already. Partners include Air India, Hero Honda, NTPC and Central Bank of India along with Coca-Cola while state run SAIL and ONGC may be asked to put in money in sponsorship deals.
