RBI pushes banking facilities to remote areas

RBI pushes banking facilities to remote areasThe Reserve Bank of India has expressed its concerns over the non availability of minimum banking facilities in a larger part of the country.

Around half of the population in India doesn't even have bank account. People from most of rural parts of the country are still unable to receive the basic banking operations.

Looking at this, the apex bank has decided to step in and provide banking operations to remote villages and to the poorest people of the country.

RBI has suggested various banks to reaching out to the financially-viable people, who don't have access, by opening new accounts with ATM card facilities.

It has also asked to appoint one credible person in the area as a banking correspondent (BC). The BC will be the agent of the bank who can reach out to the customers at the grass-root level.

BC can be provided with a hand-held device that could be connected to the main bank's network through wireless connection. The customers can swap their ATM cards in this device. Further, the bank can provide loans to its customers so that they don't depend on the local money lenders.
