To prevent e-waste Mountain, India shall act now: UN
Action to collect and recycle e-waste by India and China and other developing countries to avoid the hazardous of e-waste Mountains is greatly necessitated as noted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Data from 11 developing countries have been used to estimate current and future e-waste generation that shall include old and decaying desk and laptop computers, printers, digital photo and music devices, refrigerators, mobile phones, pagers, toys and television sets.
E-waste generation is now at over lakh of tonnes a year from refrigerators, personal computers, TVs, printers and mobile phones in India. The report on e-waste generation in India also electronic waste from old computers shall to a high level of 500% in India, and between 200 and 400 percent in South Africa and China by the year 2020.
Also the level of e-waste from leftover mobile phones is expected to be about 18 times higher than its 2007 levels. It will have serious cost for the environment and public health and its bad effects can be seen in today's environment as well and with time the consequences shall only increase.
