In response to a petition, about black money stashed in foreign banks, filed in the Supreme Court by ex-Law Minister and renowned jurist Ram Jethmalani and five others, the Additional Solicitor General, Gopal Subramanium, has promised an explanation about the measures taken by the government within 48 hours!

Though questioning the SC about the rather "mystifying" timing of filing the PIL - with elections round the corner - Subramanium told the bench, headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan: "We will file an affidavit within 48 hours even though we have taken action."

The petitioners - who, along with Jethmalani, include KPS Gill, Subhash Kashyap, Gopal Sharman, Jalbala Vaidya, and Prof B B Dutta - had alleged that the government had been sluggish in trying to obtain information on the deposits in LGT Bank in Liechtenstein.

However, the UPA government will apprise the SC by Friday about its "more than adequate" measures taken to seize the much-awaited secret data about account holders having siphoned black money into LGT. Subramanium said: "We are in complete control of the situation!"

After the Wednesday hearing, unnamed sources told TOI: "The government received in last week of March data on account holders offered by the German authorities in a CD form. This is likely to figure prominently in the soon to be filed affidavit in SC."
