Suns' Stoudemire has eye surgery, expected to miss eight weeks

Suns' Stoudemire has eye surgery, expected to miss eight weeksLos Angeles  - The Phoenix Suns will be without Amare Stoudemire for the next eight weeks, after the All-Star power forward underwent successful surgery on Friday to repair a partially detached retina in his right eye.

"We are very glad to hear that Amare should have a 100 per cent recovery relative to his vision and his long-term prognosis is excellent," Suns president of basketball operations and general manager Steve Kerr said in a statement.

"Obviously, it is very disappointing to lose him at this time. We are all very excited about the progress the team is making, but Amare's health and the health of all our players is our number one concern."

Stoudemire is the Suns' leading scorer, averaging 21.4 points, along with 8.1 rebounds and in all 53 games this season.

Also, Orlando Magic All-Star guard Jameer Nelson had successful season-ending surgery late Thursday on the torn right labrum in his shoulder, and will undergo 4-6 months of rehab.

Nelson dislocated the shoulder on February 2 against Dallas.

"We talked this afternoon when he woke up from surgery and he seemed to be doing well," Magic general manager Otis Smith told the Orlando Sentinel. "It was the right thing to do."

The injury-ravaged Indiana Pacers lost forward Mike Dunleavy indefinitely with a right knee injury, the team announced.

Dunleavy will receive other medical opinions regarding the knee that forced him to miss the first 34 games of the season. Once that process is completed, he and the Pacers' medical staff will make a determination on the direction of treatment.

Since returning to the lineup, Dunleavy has averaged 15.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

The Pacers are already without All-Star Danny Granger, who is expected to miss up to three weeks with a partial tendon tear in the sole of his right foot, suffered Wednesday night against Charlotte.

Granger is averaging a career-best 25.0 points per game, sixth best in the league. dpa
