Curtail limitless powers of Pak Army Chief : Gul

Curtail limitless powers of Pak Army Chief : GulRawalpindi, Feb. 2: The unrestrained powers enjoyed by the Pakistan Army Chiefs has raised several eye-brows with many top former military officials demanding a cut back to their limitless authority.

Addressing the Defence of Pakistan conference here, Lt Gen (retd) Hameed Gul said that the Army chief has unlimited powers, which needed to be curtailed.

Citing the example of the 1999 Kargil war, Gul said the chiefs of other forces were kept in the dark regarding important decisions on Kargil.

Stressing on the need of revamping the whole set-up of the army in the country, he said: "There is a need for introducing certain changes in the Army set-up and a commission having representation of ex-servicemen and other departments."

He further asked the federal government of Pakistan to register a case against the former President General. Parvez Musharraf for bringing instability in the country.

Gul also asked for an immediate cease fire to the military operations being carried out in the tribal areas, and said that the issue should be solved through talks and dialogue.

"The problem over there should be solved through parliament. We need unity at this time as we have some serious threats and our enemies are trying to destabilize us so that they may get their ugly goals," The News quoted Gul, as saying.

Taking a strong note of the continuous drone hits in the tribal regions of the country, Gul commented that they should be shot down if they continue to target people inside its territory.

Commenting on the issue of Kashmir, he demanded that the Kashmir movement should be restarted to win the right of self-determination for the Kashmiris. (ANI)
