NASA Astronaut Sets Record for Spending Time in Outer Space
It is known that astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) perform several risky tasks and work very hard to carry out a variety of research for mankind and advancement of science and technology. Recently a NASA astronaut has set a new record of spending maximum time in space.
October 13 marked as the 200th day of the scheduled 342-day mission on board the orbiting outpost. Kelly also passed the record of the most total cumulative time spent in space by a US astronaut i.e. 381 days, 15 hours and 11 minutes. His stay includes 180 days of his stays in previous missions.
By setting record of staying in space for 382 days Kelly breaks the previous record set by astronaut Mike Fincke in 2011. According to NASA, Fincke, who is a veteran of three space missions, stayed aboard the space station for two long-duration expeditions.
Kelly has become the first American citizen to have spent more than a year’s time in space on a single mission. Kelly has been with Roscosmos cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, who has also sent 12 months in orbit.
Kelly during his stay at the space station has been assigned tasks to collect medical data to support future astronaut missions far away from earth into the deep space to the asteroids and Mars.
Kelly wrote on Twitter on Friday: “Records are meant to be broken. Look forward to one of my colleagues surpassing [mine] on our Journey to Mars!”
