MPs to question energy firm heads on Tuesday
MPs in the UK will question chiefs of six companies in the energy sector over allegations that they abused Britain's energy market for escalating home electricity and gas prices.
Following a series of tariff rises by power companies, MPs in the UK have summoned the big six power firms to the Parliament on the matter. Energy prices have become a crucial political agenda since opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband said that he would freeze prices if his party wins the general election in 2015.
The industry regulator has also fined Scottish Power about £8.5 million. British Gas, SSE, Scottish Power, npower, EDF and E. ON as well as smaller suppliers will appear to the Parliament next Tuesday for providing evidence to the Energy and Climate Change Committee about recent price increases. According to estimates, the value of energy bills has risen to twice their levels since 2000.
