Mouth fluids to diagnose diseases

Mouth-FluidsScientists have stated that little-known mouth fluid may aid in detecting an early, non-invasive test for the mouth-related diseases.

This fluid which is supposedly called as gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), is produced in tiny amounts in the gums produced at the rate of millionths of a quart per tooth. Also, GCF aids in simple inexpensive test to that can prevent tooth loss.

Eric Reynolds and colleagues who did the research noted GCF accumulation at sites of inflammation which is basically the crevice between teeth and gums. But they are looking out for the exact chemical composition of the fluid.

According to the data collected from 12 patients with a history of gum disease, it was concluded that GCF samples contained proteins from several sources, including bacteria and other breakdown products of gum tissue and bone.

They also saw antibacterial substances that caused resistance towards infection.

The study, which is still under progress is being considered as one of the most comprehensive analysis of GCF till date, appears in ACS" monthly Journal of Proteome Research.
