Motorola Taken To Court Over Jobs By RIM

Motorola Taken To Court Over Jobs By RIMRecently, RIM informed in a lawsuit that Motorola is making an adverse effort from keeping the BlackBerry maker from hiring the fired or soon-to-be fired Motorola employees.

Motorola has informed that there would be more than 3,000 job cuts. However, it has been learnt that due to the nondisclosure agreements, those employees may have a tough time getting a new job.

Because of this reason, a lawsuit was filed by Research in Motion (RIM) last week in which it claimed that Motorola improperly blocked the BlackBerry maker from hiring employees Motorola has already fired or plans to terminate. An agreement was signed in February in which the mobile phone manufacturers agreed not to solicit each other's employees.

However, RIM informed that back in august the agreement expired and it’s asking the court to invalidate the pact. Other than this, unspecified damages from Motorola are also being sought by RIM for what it said are improper and unfair competitive practices.

RIM said in the lawsuit, “RIM entities continue to grow and hire new employees within the United States and globally against a backdrop of recent public announcements by Motorola that it has and will continue to make massive layoffs.”

It has been learnt that the lawsuit has come since Motorola is restructuring to rein in costs because its handset division has lost nearly $2.8 billion since the start of 2007. Recently, it was informed by the company that it would be slashing executive pay and trimming employee benefits to control the costs.

Co-CEO Sanjay Jha informed via a statement, “The sustained downturn in the global economy requires that we take these difficult but necessary steps. While serving our customers remains a top priority, we are equally focused on our cost structure and we will continue to implement appropriate measures to conserve cash and reduce expenses.”
