Mobile Search Deal announced by Yahoo, T-Mobile
Yahoo, which is constantly making efforts to control the mobile search market, is being responded by positive responses. A recent announcement made by T-Mobile reveals that they have selected Yahoo to power its latest web2go portal. The new portal will have T-Mobile subscribers who use the Internet, use the Yahoo-powered service by default.
The T-Mobile content catalog of ringtones and wallpaper will let the T-mobile subscribers to browse the Internet along with search. Advertising would be provided by Yahoo on all search result pages, with both companies sharing advertising revenue. However, none of the companies announced revenue sharing and other contract details.
For quite some time now, Yahoo has been trying to compete with Google and Microsoft in PC and mobile searches, and the company had been getting dominated by Search major Google in the regard. Yahoo is cautiously working to get its OneSearch service on as many phones as possible, with the aim to undercut Google before it manages to dominate mobile search.
Nearly 3.21 million subscribers use T-Mobile in the U.S., and the company has been making efforts to convert more of them into Web browsers, in order to sell them data plans.
Yahoo, via the deals with T-Mobile and AT&T, would get a combined network of 105 million subscribers in the U.S. who will use Yahoo search portals. Additionally, already Yahoo and Deutshe Telekom have been working in 10 European nations. Both companies share the search advertising revenue.
The Sunnyvale-based Yahoo also has multiple agreements with companies in countries like India, Vietnam and the Philippines. Though these deals haven’t helped the company to earn much revenues, it hopes wider mobile phone adoption in those countries will help increase mobile advertising as well.
